Client Introduction

The Towel Museum in Japan is a world-renowned institution that combines art, culture, and industry. Beyond its galleries, it operates a sophisticated manufacturing and distribution network for premium textile products. To maintain its high standards of service amidst a changing economic landscape, the Towel Museum has proactively sought out cutting-edge automation to future-proof its supply chain.

Success Story

The logistics sector in Japan is currently grappling with a severe labor crisis, with two-thirds of companies reporting significant operational impacts due to staff shortages. Among all warehouse roles, dock operations—specifically the manual unloading of heavy shipping containers—remain the most difficult to staff due to the grueling physical demands and repetitive nature of the work.

To address these staffing constraints head-on, the Towel Museum partnered with BlueSword to implement the Hammerhead Automated Truck Unloading Robot. This transition has completely redefined what the dock looks like when automation takes over the heavy lifting. Instead of a team of workers manually hauling heavy cartons, the process is now managed by a single operator who initiates the cycle with the push of a few buttons.

The Hammerhead robot docks directly to the truck and utilizes advanced technology to pick items weighing up to 50 kg per cycle. By processing between 500 and 900 cases per hour, the robot has effectively eliminated the traditional bottleneck at the receiving dock. The solution does more than just replace manual labor; it creates a seamless, high-speed flow by feeding cases directly into the warehouse conveyor system without interruption.

By transforming a labor-intensive chore into a streamlined, one-person supervisory task, the facility has achieved a level of efficiency and safety that was previously impossible, setting a new benchmark for automated dock operations in Japan.
